Do Smart Thermostats Actually Save Money?

Sometimes, and it depends almost entirely on how you heat your home now. If your timer is already well set and you turn the heating down when you go out, expect very little.

Sometimes, and by much less than the advertising implies for a lot of people. A smart thermostat does not make heat cheaper. All it can do is put less heat into your home, at better times, in the rooms that need it. If you are already fairly good at that, there is not much left for it to win.

The short version: the households that save real money are the ones currently heating an empty house, heating every room to the same temperature, or wrestling with a programmer they have never fully understood. If you set a sensible schedule years ago and turn the heating down when you go away, a smart thermostat buys you convenience and control. Treat any saving as a bonus.

Where the headline numbers come from

Every manufacturer quotes a percentage, usually somewhere in the low tens. Those figures are not invented, but they are produced by studies the manufacturer paid for, measured against a baseline the manufacturer chose. Change the baseline and the number moves enormously. Compared with heating a house 24 hours a day, almost any control strategy looks spectacular. Compared with a competently programmed timer, the same thermostat might save a few percent.

Independent results are far messier, and some studies have found savings close to zero in homes that were already well controlled. That is not a scandal. It is the same finding stated from a different starting point: the thermostat is not the variable, your current heating behaviour is.

So the useful question is not "how much do smart thermostats save?" It is "how much heat am I currently wasting, and will this device stop that?"

The waste worth attacking

Two patterns account for most of it.

The first is heating an empty home. If your heating runs to a fixed schedule and your household's hours are irregular, you are paying to warm rooms nobody is in, several times a week. This is what geofencing addresses, and it is the feature that most reliably produces a saving, because it fixes a genuine mismatch rather than shaving a degree off a setpoint.

The second, and the bigger one in most houses, is heating every room the same. A single thermostat measures one room, usually the hallway, and the boiler heats the entire house to satisfy it. Bedrooms sit at living-room temperature all evening with the doors shut and nobody in them. Fixing that means room-by-room control, which means smart radiator valves or zone wiring, not just a clever thermostat on the wall. That distinction matters when you are budgeting. The thermostat alone addresses the smaller of the two problems. The valves address the larger one, and they are the part people leave out to save on the initial purchase.

What your heating system decides for you

This is the part that varies most by country, and generic advice gets it wrong constantly.

If you have a modern condensing boiler that supports OpenTherm, a thermostat that can modulate the flame will run the boiler at a lower output for longer instead of cycling it hard on and off. If you have a heat pump, the calculation inverts. Heat pumps are most efficient running steadily at a low flow temperature, so the old advice about deep setbacks when you go out can cost you more than it saves. A thermostat that does not understand this can make a heat pump worse.

If you are in North America with forced-air heating, you are in a different world again: low-voltage wiring, a C-wire question, and cooling as well as heating in the same device. That is ecobee territory, and its remote sensors exist because forced-air systems have their own version of the every-room-the-same problem.

And if you are on electric storage heaters or district heating, most of this article applies only loosely. Check what your specific system responds to before assuming any of it transfers.

Count the subscription before you count the saving

Some manufacturers put the money-saving features behind a monthly plan. Geofencing, open-window detection, adaptive pre-heating and the energy reports are common examples, and they are precisely the ones that change your consumption rather than your convenience. Without the plan you have a well-built schedulable thermostat.

Do the arithmetic honestly. Take the annual fee, set it against the saving you actually expect given everything above, and see whether anything survives. For a household that was already heating sensibly, a subscription can wipe out the entire benefit and then some. For one that was heating an empty five-bedroom house all day, it will not come close. Both answers are legitimate, and plenty of good thermostats charge nothing at all.

So is it worth buying?

Buy one if you are heating an empty home on a rigid schedule, if you want room-by-room control you do not currently have, or if your existing programmer is bad enough that you avoid touching it. Those are the cases where the money argument holds up.

Buy one for the control and the comfort if that is what you want, which is a perfectly good reason on its own. Being able to warm the house before you get home, or see what the heating actually did last week, has real value that has nothing to do with the bill.

What you should not do is buy one expecting the manufacturer's headline percentage to land on your account. It very likely will not, and the honest version of this recommendation is that the payback period is much longer than the packaging suggests for a well-run home.
