Do Smart Thermostats Work Without Wi-Fi?

Yes, for the part that matters. The schedule runs on the thermostat itself, so your heating keeps working when the internet drops. What you lose is the app, geofencing and voice control.

Yes. Your heating will not stop because the internet did. A smart thermostat keeps its schedule on the device and measures the room with its own sensor, so it goes on switching the boiler exactly as programmed whether or not it can reach the outside world. The buttons or dial on the wall still work too.

The short version: without a connection you have a good programmable thermostat. Everything that made it worth the extra money is the part that needs the network, so a brief outage is a non-event and a permanent one changes what you should have bought.

What keeps working, and why

The core job of a thermostat is small and entirely local. Read the temperature, compare it against a target, and close a switch to call for heat. None of that involves the internet, and no sensible manufacturer designs it to, because a thermostat that lets your pipes freeze during a broadband fault would be a product recall rather than a feature.

So the schedule is stored on the device. If you have programmed 19 degrees from six in the morning until nine, and 18 in the evening, that runs from local memory. Manual changes at the wall work. Any hardware frost protection works. If your system uses radiator valves, like Drayton Wiser, they talk to their hub over their own radio rather than over the internet, so room-by-room control usually survives an outage too.

The same is true of a tado system running Matter over Thread. The thermostat, the bridge and any local controller are all on your own network, so local automation carries on while the connection to the wider world is down.

What you actually lose

Everything that needs to reach beyond your house.

Remote control from the app is the obvious one. Turning the heating on from the train stops working, because the app's command has nowhere to go. On most systems the app also fails when you are sitting at home on the same network, since the traffic is routed through the manufacturer's servers rather than directly to the thermostat.

Geofencing goes too, and this is the loss that costs you money. Geofencing works by your phone reporting its location to a service which then tells the thermostat what to do. Break either link and the thermostat falls back to its schedule, which means it goes back to heating the house at fixed times regardless of whether anyone is coming home.

Weather compensation stops for the same reason. A thermostat that pre-heats based on tomorrow's forecast needs the forecast, and that arrives over the internet.

Voice control almost always fails. Alexa and Google Assistant are cloud services, so even a command spoken to a speaker three feet from the thermostat travels a long way before it comes back. Apple Home does better here on Matter and Thread devices, because a home hub on your own network can handle some of it locally.

Then the quiet ones: no firmware updates, no energy reports, and no history logging while the connection is out. ecobee and its competitors all record usage data centrally, so an outage leaves a gap in the record rather than losing the heating.

A short outage and a permanent one are different questions

Treat these separately, because the answers are not the same.

A broadband fault for a few hours or a few days is genuinely nothing to plan around. The house stays warm, the schedule runs, and everything reconnects on its own when service returns. Nobody should choose a thermostat based on this, and no manufacturer handles it so badly that it becomes a reason to avoid them.

Living permanently without an internet connection is a different decision. You can wire most smart thermostats in and they will heat your house, but the majority need a connection during setup to register the device against an account, so getting one commissioned ranges from fiddly to genuinely impossible depending on the model. If outage resilience matters to you

Some designs degrade more gracefully than others, and it is worth asking the question before you buy rather than after.

Look for a system where the wall unit talks to a local hub over its own radio, because that link is independent of your broadband. Look for Matter and Thread support, which means a controller on your own network can drive the device without anything leaving the house. And check whether the manufacturer's app can talk to the thermostat directly on the local network or whether it always goes via their servers, because that single design decision is the difference between an app that works during an outage and one that does not.

The thing to be clear about is that none of this affects whether you stay warm. It affects how much of what you paid for still works while the connection is down. For most homes that is a mild inconvenience a couple of times a year, and not a reason to choose one thermostat over another.
